Coffee arrived in America in 1710, when the Netherlands exported seedlings to its colony in Guiana, from where it went to Colombia. In 1723 it was taken to Brazil by Sergeant Francisco de Mello Palheta, to the state of Pará, and later it spread to other countries.
Our grandparents knew its flavor in the 18th century, when its cultivation began in the Chanchamayo valley, Junín, the main coffee growing area in the central region.
The writer Clemente Palma, son of the traditionist Ricardo, described it as “the devil’s drink”, and the Duke of Talley demanded it: “Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel and soft as love”.
